Default I failed recon

I drove in and waited in line until my appointment time. The only other car was a taxi.
A man walked up to the car and asked what I wanted recon for. I said the car is lowered.
He pushed down on the front of the car, walked toward the rear, pushed down on the back of the car and told me to follow him to the trailer.
He said that he needed my license, registration, and $15.
He returned my license and registration, took the $15 and told me to fill out a paper on what modifications were done.
He left for a while into another part of the trailer. When he returned, I handed him the paper I filled out,
and then he gave me a yellow copy and said, "the front suspension is too stiff. You have 90 days to fix it and then make another appointment."
All this in about 8 minutes.

I can't say I'm upset, but I now understand why many are frustrated about this "recon" requirement. How do you determine what suspension is too stiff and what is satisfactory to pass by a simple push on the car? After reading parts of HAR 19-134, I noticed many gray areas and could only be decided by the inspector who is looking over your car at that time. I won't rant any further, but it really does seem that recon is preventing many car enthusiasts like me to continue on with our hobbies and legally drive them on the road.

I believe the current recon Inspectors have all worked there over twenty years each and know how to inspect vehicles pursuant to the HAR 19-134. the rule states reconstructed vehicles need to have 2 inches of suspension travel (compression) ...so if the inspector pushes down (with minimal effort) on the front or rear of any vehicle and the side wall of the tire displays the only movement...then the tire becomes the suspension...cumon guys...most people use "coil overs" to solve this dilema. granted there are some models that cant comply ...like an MRX...these guys inspect (at least 12 vehicles a day) and have seen most scenarios...30 minutes are given for each inspection, most dont take that long (dependeing on whats going on in the office) but there are many variables...people not showing up on time, people not able to complete the application in a timely maner, some wierd / one off mod/ no money , no drivers license...on and on and on.

there are no "gray areas" in those admain rules...its black and white..its not left to the Gen publics interpretaion...that responsibility belongs to the DOT...remember recon (AKA: Motor Vehicle Control) is merely contracted by the state to inforce the rule (they are employed by C&C Honolulu/not the State)...and recon is a very small part of there overall responsibilty...dont bang on the brothers for doing there thing...you can always call there for advice. ..they are always willing to help

Pwned?

Gotta admit though...to the layman, that sure as hell doesn't look very "technical".

Wow. I don't think my stock suspension can do that. Well actually I'd have to stand on the hood, then it would move that much.

Thanks Lois. I'm honored to be pwned by you any day. lol
But, I don't think I can fix an air ride suspension to travel 2".
I tested the suspension travel of a stock one like mine and even that one didn't travel much... What to do?
I'm not trying to fight it, just trying hard to be compliant.

what would happen if you just aired it down, and put spacers to get back to approximately stock ride height?

with only the min. of like 5 psi in the bags, shouldn't they have lots of give?

2 inches of suspension travel is a lot of travel. If your suspension is going to give that much with minimal effort, what is the point of dropping the car? It seems that these rules were put into place to just prevent people from modifying their cars completely.

Recon is one of those things that protect retards from themselves (more than other people anyways).

2in is hard
not to many cars come outta GM performance division w/ that much so I though.
And when I went stiffer I was worried, but they were looking for initial give

so I passed
can you get just a bit of give easily if not 2'' from just pushing?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that but at 5psi or 50 psi, it feels the same.

It doesn't really "give" much. Funny thing is that when he push down on the front, I saw the plastic bumper/front face flex first! Haha. These Japanese cars nowadays...

Recon is good in that it help prevents unsafe modified cars on the road. But with the improvements in technology of many aftermarket parts, can recon recognize it?... Hmm... I guess it does sometimes - like the elimination of wheel size changes, etc.

Have a wonderful weekend

actually that was simply an extremely BAD decision on Admin's part just so they don't have to hear the public b!tching.

the elimination of wheel size inspection and letting it go to appease the squeaky wheels (no pun intended) opens up all sorts of liabilities.

throwing on giant bling wheels on vehicles equipped with inadequate braking = danger

Yeah, that was a bad idea. But it might help out a lot of shops with brake jobs. lol

I have never actually seen anyone with blingy rims upgrade their brakes...in fact, the center hub of the rim is the same size as their rotor.
