I have some friends that will be visiting and they want all of us to spend 4-7 days camping on Molokai.
Any suggestions? I've done some reading but it is always better to ask those who live there. Quiet, with Showers & Bathrooms are on my list but I know that is not easy to find. TIA for any info |

Yep, as of August 1st, if I stay here, I'll be camping too... ![]() CAMPING on Molokai as a traveller is possible, but it will be difficult. There are no real campgrounds (cabin or lodge type); heck, there's only one hotel and a "House of Charity" that operates like a hostel with some rustic accommodations as low as 10 dollars a night (I've also seen tents in their yard). Link for Kolapa House of Charity Tours Here is a link to all the public facilities for Maui County on Molokai...I think only Papohaku Beach Park and One Alii Beach Park (pronounced oh-ney Ah-lee-ee) are open to overnight camping by permit only. The Molokai Fish and Dive Shop will have most of what you need for camping, but they're expensive, and for what you'll spend buying all your camp gear, you might be better off over here..... Hotel Molokai, about 180 a night for a good room with lots of amenities. Wow, I didn't even know that they were that much. Too bad it's really hard to get a Bed and Breakfast permit here....I know what I'd do in my retirement years.

Thanks for the info Hee Haw.
Just in case anyone else is interested in this here is what I have been told, Papohaku Beach (county) is the best beach camping with water, cold showers and even flush toilets. Palaau (state) is the best non beach camping. I'm still not sure if they have open water but they supposedly have flush toilets. Other options are, like Hee Haw said, One Ali'i Park (county) and Waikolu lookout (state). Waikolu does not have water and fires are not allowed. There are also some really nice house rentals for around $750 a week if you are not the camping type but want more privacy or to be able to hang out more with friends, which you can't really get at a hotel. |
