i'm thinking of getting a 10 gallon with a simple fish (nods to Bruce).

maybe if Kidlets get into it i shall teach them the fine art of raising a killer Oscar.

Cichlids are simple. 10 gallons is a good start.

Started my son with Koi, which I eventually took over on that one. He just enjoyed watching them swim back and forth when he was a baby.

Only problem with turtles is they can carry the salmonella bacteria. Handwashing is very important with turtles. Used to have 2 red eared sliders.

Wal*Mart had 10 gallon outfits, outside filter, LIGHTED HOOD! (always liked those), pretty much the whole package, for about 40 bucks.

Then if you want gravel, little underwater castles and sea men (no, not the other kind ), that'll be your extra expense.

I already have one of those! LOL! And yes, he can be somewhat expensive (not really), but I love him none the less! ROFL!!!

------edit------
Actually, he would probably say that I'm the expensive one to maintain! LOL!!!

checked out the town wal-mart. only had cheesy plastic plants and neon-glow cheesy-looking decorations (guess you gotta have the black light).

i think pets discount still has a good selection, haven't been back there in a bit. i don't want to put cheesy stuff into the shark tank. i was thinking maybe a sunken pirate ship, some kind of coral-looking decorations, and a bunch of real plants for him to play and hide in.

i might move him into the parlor later, too. they put him in the dining room, but we only eat there, so he can't see us the rest of the time. i think he gets bored.

God forbid if you have for dinner..... FISH! *rainbow shark faints*

If Modern Pet Center is still there in the "back side" of Kaheka Street, try there. There's another pet shop on Ward by the Supercuts store, they have some pretty good stuff too (we bought filter replacement cartridges from them).

Rainbow sharks aren't all that bad, actually. I had them with other fish of medium temperament, and my poor judgment had some other not-so-sociable fish (Pimelodella pictus catfish) that created some havoc. Bala sharks are another "shark" fish that look really nice without excess aggression (while they're still small).

Now I want to make a tank. They're not using the 3.5 hex tank...hmmmm.

yeah, they're still there. bought some stuff from them like 20 years ago, they're still there. ironically, i saw their shop (well, drove past it) coming out of wal-mart tonight, after not finding anything there i liked.

the shop didn't look open, so i didn't want to park on the street, walk there, and find it was closed.

i'll check it out later.

well. too late. went out this a.m. to make breakfast, tank was empty(!).

had a feeling he jumped out somehow, even though we only left the tank 3/4 full.

found rainbow shark, aka hungry fish a good distance away from the tank on the floor (lucky i didn't step on him in the dark).

i KNEW i should've gone back to pet's discount after wal-mart last night - but i was tired and wanted to get home to my family.

well, gotta go the tank accessories anyway... will pick up a new fish AFTER i get the hood.

When I was in 3rd grade we used to have one of those small tanks (5 gallon, I think). The fish used to jump out of it all of the time (I'd forget to put the lid down on it after feeding them) and we'd end up with a bunch of baby fishies that would get eaten by the other fish. Mostly remember having neon tetras, angelfish, guppies, etc.

Those neon tetra's are pretty aggressive. Damn fish beat up some of my brother's bala sharks.

back to petland again today with son and wife.

bought tank hood, some plants, a big rock, and another rainbow shark.

this guy is kinda shy - he spends all his time hiding in the plants (he'll just sit vertically in the leaves) and watching us.

maybe he is plotting...

^^ i made sure the tank lid fits well, and i cut out the space for the filter juuuuuust enough to clear the filter (no extra space for him to jump out).

Self liberating fish...

Hahahaha.

Thank god my koi aren't like that. I'd be sick to lose a $80 fish.

red belly pacu are entertaining, people always think they're piranha unless they really know their fish. plant eaters but will tear s*it up in the tank if they get hungry from some green and leafy noms

pacus are ugly... have you seen their teeth? Granny style.

Yeah, but pacus are more opportunist than herbivores. They'll eat your small fish when you aren't looking. Not to mention they'll grow to about 2 feet.
