Default vog

i know lois made a vog thread a while back, this ones kinda different.

i dont remember the vog being this bad in previous years, or maybe i didnt notice as only this past 6 months or so of vog has affected me. (when i say bad in reference to the vog i mean the length of days that it has been present)
am i correct that the last 6 months have been unusually bad?

btw, i reside i hilo, but i thought id post in this section as oahu has been getting it also from what ive heard, and this section gets more traffic.

it's been bad in previous years, but only on brief occassions (like a day or two). i don't recall it being this consistently bad, for prolonged periods.

my allergies and asthma are always acting up, many people at work are suffering (no a/c), even my son is starting to cough regularly and he's not even sick.

i've taken to running the HEPA filters at home 24/7 and the a/c on if we're at home just so we don't have to open the windows when the vog is bad.

It's been pretty bad lately. I haven't seen it this bad in a while. Of course, when I was in Hilo, it was really bad.

do those HEPA (filters) filter out the sulfur dioxide? recently, every time there are periods of prolonged vog it affects my tonsils, making them sore and inflamed; no cough though. vog makes me super tired too, and i think it affects my immune system as well; i think vog makes me more susceptible to getting sick/sore throat.
no one else i know is affected by the vog though...

I'm not 100% sure on sulfur dioxide particulate - they do seem to help filter out particulate matter, though - the filters get pretty dirty, so i figure they're doing something.

I also run two ionizers if the vog is bad or if the weather has been really humid to help out the HEPA filters.

and i change the split duct a/c filters about every 6 mos - i've heard about people making their own filters out of the charcoal filter media, it's supposed to work better than the regular filters. might give it a try.

at work, i'm running an ozone generator right by the a/c intake to help keep the odors from adjacent machine/equipment rooms down, and cooking smells from the people in the next office that cook all kinds of stuff on a hotplate. the grids get pretty dirty, so i'm wondering if they're filtering out particulate matter as well.

idk about charcoal media, but what i have found is that what some people have done to filter out sulfur dioxide is to get a high quality aquarium air pump (the kind with multiple outputs) and run the airstone/bubblers in a bucket of a solution of 1 cup baking soda dissolved in 2 gals of water. something like the so2 attaches to the baking soda and stays in the water. supposed to work well in small enclosed rooms.

tsuji, i'll give u a call or txt u later

I've also been saying this!! I'm Hawai'i born and raised and I don't EVER remember being this bad and for this long. More people who have never had asthma and allergies are getting it. Earth is changing. The end is near.

ayup. it was so bad yesterday i thought we were all getting sick - everyone was coughing yesterday and this morning. allergies and asthma are getting worse for me and my son. we were dying yesterday at practice doing wind sprints. i decided to hold off on running suicides until the weather clears up.
