Default I bought a 'new' 65 Datsun pick-up

So, my new toy... is a 1965 Datsun L320 truck.

2083 lbs, 67 hp (freshly rebuilt 1300), 4.88 diff, 4 on the floor, 1/2 ton load rating, etc.

I bought it from LA, and had it hauled over here to Ohio. (didn't want to drive that far with a 4.88 diff, it'd be painful)

Rust-free.

I've put about 5500 miles on it since I got it in June, and it's still awesome.

Let's see if these pics work.

Cherry!! I love the old Datsuns. Just like all the cars from that era, open the hood...and all you see is an engine, and a battery. That's it.

Thanks! Oops, forgot about the underhood pic:

It's actually much cleaner now that I've cleaned off the dust, so I should get some more pics sometime.
It actually has a little glass viewing window on the front of the carb, so you can see the fuel level. A glass sediment bowl, too.
There's actually a dipstick for the manual tranny, which you can reach from inside by pulling out a little plug next to the gas pedal.

Manual everything, even brakes, which are 4-wheel drums. They're actually a little overbuilt at 10" all around, and capable of stopping it damn fast now that they're adjusted and well greased. But, they can be a tad un-predictable with all the moving parts involved.
Oh, and it's got a fully boxed frame, 6 lug wheels, kingpin front end, etc.
It came with a whole bed full of spare parts (some rare NOS), and stock wheels and such. I got the truck and everything for 2500, plus 900 to ship it.

I'm not really interested in a bigger engine. She can take off just fine thanks to the stock 4.88 rear end gear. 1st gear is torquey as hell and almost useless, so I just take off in 2nd most of the time.
Actually, a big MG engine could be close to bolting right in. The Datsun engines were licensed copies of the MG engine.
But, I've already got a fast/fun car for performance, and had my fill of racing. I'm fine with the truck being slow, practical, and rock solid reliable. If anything, I may put on some taller tires and/or a different rear-end gear to get a better/smoother top speed on the highway. I don't have a tach so I don't know the rpm, but I try to keep it around 60 to 65mph. It seems to OK with spinning that fast, but it is loud.

Holy snikes, that's cool! I'm surprised they're so affordable what with being vintage and all that?

That could be really nice as long as everything works (tough to know when stuff has been modded that much).

I'd say closer to 5 or 6K would be a good deal, but he may have easily put 10K into it.

Personally I like mine a lot better because it's closer to stock and has the rough patina like it's used a little. I don't mind that mine is really slow, as I'm in no hurry anymore. My 2002 is for going fast. But that blue truck could be really nice for comfortable cruising with more power and a 5-speed.

And I doubt you'll ever find another clean one locally if you ever wanted. At any time in the country, there's only 2 or 3 for sale. I searched quite a while for mine, and am still shocked that I got it for 2500. I got lucky by finding it in an ancient ad on a forum, and the guy still had it. With nobody competing with me, and a very cooperative seller, I managed to get a great deal.
Oh, and yeah the market price is actually pretty low in general for such a rare and awesome truck. I just don't think that many people know about them. Everywhere I take mine though, people are trying to buy it from me. I could easily sell mine for $5K or so tomorrow if I wanted, but I'm not going to do that.

Oh, and there's a guy on Oahu with one I think, but the thing has been heavily modded with a giant engine. Last I saw, the guy was trying to find a hood (stock one was removed due to giant engine), and he wanted to take it back closer to stock.

I'm in the mood for something reliable as of late. As cool as the oldies are, I'm sick of fixing shiat. Saving up for an FT86...hopefully.

Either that or a nice kit for my 7.

oh, i think i know what you're talking about - isn't that the one that's been turned into a pro street truck?

it's going to take some work to turn it back stock - isn't that the one with the shortened rear end and tubbed bed, etc...?

dunno how he's going to undo that or find another original bed.

Is that Eric A's truck? I went to HS with that guy. He's had the truck since then.

Wow...surprised he sold it then? Hard to sell a classic that you grew up with...so many memories.
